Long Shadows Vintners 'Chester Kidder' Red, Columbia Valley 2013
93 Points Wine Advocate
Made by Gilles Nicault, the 2013 Chester Kidder (58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Syrah, 5% Petit Verdot and the rest Cabernet Franc) sports an inky color as well as rich, serious notes of blackcurrants, scorched earth and chocolate. Deep, rich and concentrated, with beautiful purity and fine tannin, it's going to need forgotten for at least 2-3 years.

(15.3% alcohol; 30 months in barrel; made by Gilles Nicault for Long Shadows' founder Allen Shoup): Bright ruby-red. Clean aromas of cassis, black cherry and spices lifted by a floral topnote and a hint of dried herbs. Wonderfully suave and pliant on the palate, with plum, cassis and black raspberry flavors complemented by sweet oak tones. Finishes with noble tannins and superb length and floral lift. Nicault maintains that the tight-grained oak barrels--85% new--reduce the wood element and bring out the complexity of this wine during its last ten months of élevage. He also believes that the controlled, long aging brings complex, integrated earth and graphite nuances and extends the potential life of the wine. Nicault told me he adds "the Syrah for spice, the Petit Verdot for layers and the Cabernet Franc for elegance
